UN Tax Convention: ‘From competition to collaboration, from exploitation to empowerment’

We commend the good start this 3-6 February 2025 of intergovernmental negotiations to write the United Nations Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation (UN Tax Convention).

We reiterate the calls of civil society organizations in Asia for governments to work together to deliver a UN Tax Convention that is anchored firmly on tax justice principles. A strong UN Tax Convention will serve to end illicit financial flows and global tax abuses. It will ensure equitable taxing rights across countries and provide a framework for domestic resource mobilization through progressive taxation.

As stated by Ramy Mohamed Yousef of Egypt, who was elected to head the negotiations committee, “(T)his convention isn’t just about taxes—it’s about justice.’ He said success in redefining the global tax governance will mark a paradigm shift “from competition to collaboration, from exploitation to empowerment.”
