The Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal who have suffered catastrophic flash floods and landslides over the past week. Our deepest sympathies are with the families of the hundreds who have been killed, the thousands who have been displaced, and all those working tirelessly to respond to this crisis.
The scale of devastation is a stark reminder of the increasing vulnerabilities faced by those on the frontlines of the climate emergency. This moment calls for global attention to the increasing losses and damages endured by the people of the Global South. In solidarity with Nepal, we urge the rich countries most responsible for climate change to significantly increase their contributions to the Fund for responding to Loss and Damage beyond the mere millions that have been pledged.
The time has come not only to provide immediate aid but to recognize the urgent need for sustained support to help communities recover, rebuild, and strengthen their resilience in the face of future climate risks. Together, we call on Global North governments to confront their historical responsibility for climate change and provide climate reparations to the people of Nepal and the rest of the Global South.
