The Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD) expresses in the strongest terms its condemnation of the violent and punitive acts of repression sweeping the capital city of Dhaka in Bangladesh.
We view with great outrage reports of more than a hundred protesters dead, thousands of arbitrary arrests and detention of activists, most of them youth and students, and countless others injured.
These are not the actions of a government that claims to be democratic, when it suppresses dissent. A democratic government does not crush opposition with crackdowns on ordinary citizens, with firearms and bullets, teargas, stun grenades, truncheons, anti-riot police and other forms of strong-arm tactics. “
We express our deepest solidarity with the victims of violence and their families, with our colleagues, their families and communities, with our member movements and partners, and with all people of Bangladesh.
We urgently call for an immediate cessation of all acts of harassment and repression, for the release of all political prisoners and overall, for the utmost respect for democratic principles and human rights.
