The Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD) extends its deepest solidarity to the people of Nepal who have been severely affected by the devastating flash floods in Rasuwa and surrounding areas. We grieve the lives lost and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones.
Our solidarity is with the communities who have lost their homes, livelihoods, and access to basic services, as well as those awaiting news of missing loved ones.
For people living in Nepal’s vulnerable mountain and river communities, climate-related disasters destroy homes, farms, livelihoods, and years of hard-won progress and development. Communities that have contributed the least to the climate crisis are forced to bear its growing costs.
The immediate priority must be to provide affected people with timely rescue, evacuation, and relief, with their voices at the center of recovery and reconstruction. Once the immediate crisis is addressed, we call for a broader discussion on disaster risk reduction, full reparations for climate harm, and access to climate finance for vulnerable communities in the Global South, including the Himalayan communities of Nepal.
APMDD calls for a recovery that protects people rather than deepening their economic hardships. Nepal must have access to
adequate, public, grant-based climate finance for recovery and resilience, early-warning systems, and public infrastructure, without deepening debt burdens or creating new burdens for affected communities.
The next steps must ensure that people and communities on the have the resources and power to shape their own recovery & build a more resilient future.
