Advancing Renewable Energy Transition: Albay Hosts International Principles in Practice Workshop

Albay, Philippines (August 8 to 11, 2026) – International and local leaders convened in Albay for the four-day International Workshop Principles in Practice on Renewable Energy (RE) Project Development.

The event is part of an upcoming series of “Principles in Practice” workshops aimed at exploring how to concretely apply the Ten Principles for the Rapid, Equitable, and Just Transition to Renewable Energy Systems.

Albay Governor Noel Ebriega Rosal graced the event, welcoming international and domestic delegates to the province. The workshop drew participants from a diverse coalition spanning India, Nepal, Ghana, Pakistan, Taiwan, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Colombia, and alongside representation from the host country, Philippines.

The event featured intensive structural sessions focusing on the distinct phases of renewable energy project development. Complementing the phase-based sessions, the program incorporated deep-dive thematic discussions examining systemic risks, harms, and challenges in applying the ten principles.

Over four days, delegates dove deep into the mechanics of utility-scale green projects. Key curriculum components included navigating the utility-scale renewable energy project development lifecycle matrix, mapping institutional roles and responsibilities across the lifecycle, compiling an inventory of key actors and institutions, analyzing laws, policies, regulations, and governance systems, and reviewing examples of financing, fiscal, investment, and risk mitigation instruments.

The sessions were structured to look critically at project phases, stocktaking social, environmental, human rights, financial, and labor risks and challenges, reviewing existing laws and policies, identifying institutional actors to engage with, and exploring necessary advocacy tools and knowledge materials to equip campaigners on the ground for effective engagement.
