World Bank Out of Climate Finance – CCJN

The Campaign for Climate Justice Network, Nepal (CCJN), a network of country members of Jubilee South Asia Pacific Movement on Debt and Development (JSAPMDD) organized a demonstration against the role of World Bank in climate finance near World Bank office on 12 October in Kathmandu, Nepal. Representatives of CCJN and other organizations working in the field of climate change also participated in the program.

Dr Sarba Raj Khadka, Executive Member of International Coordination Committee of Jubilee South explained the rationale of the program by stating that countries of South are most affected by the adverse effects of climate change. He said that the United States and other developed countries want the World Bank to have a central role in managing Green Climate Fund (GCF). But the World Bank does not represent the interests of the countries or communities most adversely impacted by climate change. World Bank financing will lead to further indebtedness of countries in the global South.

"The World Bank, which is responsible for increasing the vulnerabilities of LDCs and other developing countries to climate change, should not be given the right to manage the funds of the GCF. The fund should be maintained by an authorized body of the United Nations and its use should be decided by the government of each country according to their requirements," Khadka said.

CCJN member organizations include South Asia Alliance for Poverty Eradication (SAAPE), Rural Reconstruction Nepal (RRN), All Nepal Peasants' Federation (ANPFa), General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT), All Nepal Women Association (ANWA), National Alliance for Human Rights and Social Justice-Nepal (HR Alliance), and Jagaran Nepal.

Some of the slogans of the demonstration were:

  • World Bank out of climate finance
  • Climate adaptation fund: grants not loans
  • No to Private Funds for Profit
  • Our climate: not your business
  • No to World Bank role in Climate! WORLD VS BANK
