bangladesh oct 17 2012Seventeen right groups led by Equity-BD and South Asia Alliance for Poverty Eradication (SAAPE) observed 'World's Foodless Day' yesterday in Dhaka coinciding the UN sponsored 'World Food Day' protesting the reckless destruction of arable land squeezing food production under different pretext.

Other international alliances like Pesticide Action Network Asia Pacific, La Via Campesina which is the world's largest farmers network and Jubileee South have also observed the day worldwide to raise voice for hungry people.

The Bangladesh chapter of the global action groups held a human chain in front

of the National Press Club on this occasion to press for the demand that the government and other private housing companies should stop destruction of agricultural land for

allowing food production.

Rezaul Karim Chowdhury and Mostafa Kamal Akand of Equity-BD, Moinuddin Howlader, Swapan Bhuiyan, Subal Sarkar and host of others representing their respective rights organizations spoke on the occasion.

They said the government is destroying agriculture land for setting up various development projects. On the other hand, big housing companies are also occupying vast chunk of land to set up residential housing projects taking over arable land narrowing the existence of agricultural land for food production.

If the situation continues, poor will have less food available at the national level and so also globally and it justifies the observance of the world's foodless day to attract attention of the policy makers to stop land grabbing, the organizers said.
